What’s your favorite acting cliché or generalization?
‘'Less is more'’, '‘Really connect’', '‘Stop being indulgent’', '‘Be present’', '‘Acting is 90% listening'’, '‘Go with your gut'’, '‘Be bold'’, '‘It’s all in the eyes’', '‘Don’t anticipate the moment’', '‘Just BE!'’ ? We once heard of a director who instructed a guy in a scene to "“just feel her pain more"”. Ummm…....Now how, exactly, does one do that?
Casting directors, directors and even other actors offer advice they think is useful, but did you know that generalizations actually create more problems than they solve?
Thank goodness though there are actual techniques you can employ that work 100% of the time. Would it relieve you to know the three things all bad acting have in common and how to avoid them? Would it be helpful to anticipate the most common traps in every scene? Would you like to learn how to make a crew love you, without even saying a word? Or have an editor praise you without ever meeting them? What if we told you that it is important to "anticipate a moment" and that sometimes ‘'being indulgent’' can create your greatest performance ever? In short, do you know how to transcend the clichés and produce the goods, take after take?
Great actors know it, so should you.
Acting is DO-ing. Paul Barry will teach you how to DO. With actual, practical, DO-able techniques. From rehearsals to cold-reads to auditions to shoot day. No clichés. No generalizations.
